The fascination began during my undergraduate years with an introduction to what de Sade might describe as garçon de baise: fuck boy. Everyone recognizes the term to some degree—whether it applies to a notorious figure or someone you have the dubious pleasure of knowing personally. Over the past ten years, I’ve delved into observation, social experiments, and interviews, focusing on two specific subjects. Eventually, I realized I needed an individual or individuals willing to support and fund the publication of my findings. Through a longtime friend—and perhaps by luck or providence—I was introduced to a business associate and their decades-old foundation. Without this chance connection, the studies shared here would never have been so extensive or even possible.
The foundation, as you might expect from an aging, out-of-touch institution, was initially resistant to our groundbreaking research. Burdened by outdated perspectives and often misled by incomplete or very intentionally distorted information, it didn’t embrace our work right away; but organizations teetering on irrelevance, set to soon expire, rarely do. For that very reason, this business associate’s foundation now lends its name to this center.
